From Disney to the Sanctuary: The Power of Intentional Details by Laura Schwarcz

One of the things Disney does exceptionally well is paying attention to the smallest details. At Disney parks, even the trash cans change from “land to land,” matching the theme and design of each area. The flooring subtly shifts as guests move through the park. These details are so thoughtfully maintained that people often joke the trash cans are so clean you could place your food on top of them. None of this happens by accident. Every detail is intentional and designed to help guests feel welcomed, comfortable, and fully part of the experience.

This level of attention to detail offers a meaningful lesson for our worship spaces—especially as we think about including children and families. When families walk into our sanctuaries, what small details communicate that children truly belong? Are there spaces where children can sit up front and see what is happening in worship? Are there visual cues or spaces designed with their presence in mind?

Just as Disney thoughtfully shifts its spaces from holiday seasons back to everyday park life, these intentional touches are visible to guests and cast members alike. They quietly communicate care.

In our churches, small details can speak volumes. Thoughtful, welcoming spaces help children know they are not simply present in worship they are valued participants in the life of the church.
